Two Labour councillors in Croydon face the chop

Councillor facing the chop: Simon Hall under the clipper

What is it about senior Croydon Council figures and their hair?

Last week we unveiled Croydon CEO’s Jon Rouse’s Movember moustache. Now, news reaches us of a Children In Need stunt by two Labour councillors, Wayne Lawlor and Simon Hall, who on Friday night went under the clippers for charity.

It is fair to say that Councillor Hall’s hairy sacrifice was somewhat less than that of Lawlor.

Organised by Crocus, the local LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transexual) network, the councillors raised £200 on the night, but now are hoping to persuade their Town Hall colleagues to bolster that take.

Hall, who represents Fieldway, and Lawlor, South Norwood, are two of Croydon’s three openly gay councillors.

“I am delighted that this money has been raised by Crocus,” Hall said. “It shows that politicians are not afraid to have a bit of fun at their own expense for a good cause. I think Wayne may need to invest in a woolly hat.”

Lawlor said: “I would like to be able to double the £200 that has already been raised for Children In Need. I have asked the 68 remaining Croydon Councillors and senior officers to sponsor us. Arguably, I had a lot more hair to lose than Simon, but it was a very close shave.”

In total, £26.5 million was raised for children’s causes in the UK on Friday night by the BBC telethon. The Croydon councillors ask any Inside Croydon readers wanting to donate as a result of their stunt to contact the Children in Need site.
