Residents at a public meeting have called upon their councillors to speak out against the proposed closure of South Norwood police station.
With a London-wide election coming up in which reducing policing levels under Mayor Boris Johnson is a key issue, South Norwood police station is due to be axed as the Metropolitan Police tries to cope with drastic savings targets, while a custody unit is due to open in Selhurst and needs to be staffed.
Many residents at the meeting expressed grave concerns expressed about the message that the closure of the 30-year-old police building in South Norwood will send out about police coverage in the area following last year’s riots.
Wayne Lawlor, a South Norwood Councillor, said: “The 30 residents present at the meeting made it clear to us that we should speak out in favour of keeping our local police station open. We will now be running a petition against closure.”
