Position vacant: someone to manage the council’s HQ move

Our regular reader of Inside Croydon will know well that we are always keen to assist our neighbours.

Managing the move: Croydon Council wants someone who’s good with packing cases. For £78k

So we did not hesitate to re-publish here an “exciting” job opportunity, posted recently on behalf of our chums at Croydon Council, who are seeking a facilities management expert – on nearly £80,000 per year – to oversee the move from Taberner House next year to the new “Hub” which is leaning over the flyover, being built at goodness knows what cost to the local Council Tax-payers.

As you’ll see from the ad, Croydon will want the successful candidate to “deliver our overarching FM strategy”… this is not thought to be a reference to the Hub’s listing appearance “… providing leadership on accommodation and overseeing its management and rationalisation”. Yes, really.

You’ll note that no expense is being spared here: the recruitment is being handled by an outside agency.

If you decide to apply, do let us know how you get on. We’d be intrigued to find out how you are going to be spending the £900,000 on furnishing the new glass palace.

Salary: CSRB £71,142 – £78,159

Recruiter: LONDON BOROUGH OF CROYDON COUNCIL

Head of Facilities Management

About the role

Big things are happening at Croydon Council. In 2013, we’ll be moving offices: a significant event that’s not only physical but cultural too. To lead, manage and develop our Facilities Management service at this crucial time, we need a FM professional who has experience and knowledge of making complex changes happen smoothly, with everyone on board.

You’ll deliver our overarching FM strategy, providing leadership on accommodation and overseeing its management and rationalisation. We’ll also look to you to maintain an effective partnership with outsourced third parties; ensuring services are delivered cost-efficiently and to the highest of standards.

You’ll bring a professional, proactive and commercially focused approach to FM across all our departments. This includes providing senior management and political leadership with advice and policy guidance. Through this work, you’ll maintain the good reputation of FM already has within the council and with other stakeholders.

About you

To succeed, you’ll need experience of moving a similar sized organisation from within a senior FM role. This has given you the ability to understand and manage how working practices are affected during and after a move takes place. Drawing on your ability to influence at all levels; you can create a stable, secure environment in which change is accepted as positive and necessary.

Ideally, you’ve worked with local government and understand the political dimensions involved in this sector. However, it’s essential that your experience of leading major capital projects is complemented with a full and up-to-date understanding of relevant legal and regulatory frameworks. It’s also important that you’re able to get the best from outsourced contractors and suppliers. To be considered, you must also hold a MRICS and/or MBIFM qualification or equivalent.
