Travelling to London: check out this Olympic transport advice

London’s “Zil Lanes”, the network of restricted roads mainly in the centre of the city, go live this morning, barely 24 hours after the shut down of one Tube line and an overground railway line prompted transport chaos for 60,000 people leaving the Olympic Park following an Open Ceremony dress rehearsal.

Leaving nothing to chance ahead of Friday? Will it be alright on the night?

Transport for London has provided some transport advice for the next two and a half weeks for better getting around the capital.

The busiest day on the transport system will be on day 7 of the Olympics – Friday August 3 – when there will be 3.3 million extra trips in the UK. Those journeys will be concentrated in central and east London, with around 510,000 ticketed spectators in London.

Key for those travelling in to London, whether from East Croydon or on the Overground from West Croydon, travelling to the Greenwich Arena, Stratford or Wembley, is the Jubilee Line.

Here’s the specific advice offered by TfL:

The Jubilee line will be a key line used by spectators during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will be exceptionally busy, particularly in the morning and evening peaks, as spectators travel to and from the Olympic Park in Stratford, ExCeL, North Greenwich Arena and Wembley Stadium and Arena.

Busiest Section: Bond Street to Stratford
Most affected: Weekdays 7-9.30am eastbound and 4-7.30pm both directions, and from 10pm until last train
Busiest dates: 27 July – 12 August (Olympic Games) and 29 August – 9 September (Paralympic Games)

All stations between Bond Street and Stratford will be exceptionally busy including:

  • Bond Street
  • Green Park
  • Westminster
  • Waterloo
  • Southwark
  • London Bridge
  • Bermondsey
  • Canada Water
  • Canary Wharf
  • North Greenwich
  • Canning Town
  • West Ham
  • Stratford

Advice and options

If possible, try to complete your travel either before 7.30am or after 9.30am or before 4pm or after 7.30pm on weekdays.
During the Games, you might find it quicker to travel using a different route to normal or using an alternative station.
At busy times, passengers are advised to avoid changing lines at London Bridge, Canada Water, Green Park or Bond Street.
