The local Green party is calling on Croydon and Sutton residents to ensure that they take part in the consultation process for the Beddington Lane incinerator, with the deadline for objections to be submitted next Tuesday, September 18.
“Now is precisely the moment when residents in Croydon need to get involved,” Shasha Khan, of the Croydon Green Party, said.
“Let there be no doubt that this is an incinerator. The Environment Agency will issue a permit for an incinerator. Other similar applications around the country attract thousands of objections, Croydon must not be the exception.”

The Greens and Croydon Labour party have been opposed to the Beddington Lane scheme. In 2010, three Waddon councillors – Clare Hilley, Simon Hoar and Tony Harris – campaigned on a platform that they would oppose the building of an incinerator in Croydon or on its border, only to break that promise by claiming that what is planned is not an incinerator.
While it is Sutton council that is handling the planning process, you do not need to live in Sutton to lodge an objection. There’s a range of compelling reasons for the incinerator to be viewed as an inappropriate development, including:
- the lack of need for an incinerator, as the forecasts for waste are without basis;
- that the site is Metropolitan Open Land;
- that Beddington Farmlands is supposed to become a country park when the existing landfill site licence expires;
- or that the plant will create increased traffic within an Air Quality Management Area. The air quality already exceeds safe levels.
The campaign has already raised nearly £2,800 toward its £5,000 target for a fighting fund to meet possible bills for a legal challenge to the incinerator.
