The Save the David Lean Cinema Campaign is on the road again this week, with a special showing of Dennis Potter‘s Dream Child at the Shirley Community Centre in Shrublands Road from 7.30pm this Saturday, October 6.
Potter’s vision of Alice’s childhood in Dreamchild is, well, distinctly Potter-esque
This is a special 16mm presentation of a 1985 film which, in typical Potter style, blends fact, fiction and fantasy in a story centred on Alice Liddle Hargreaves, who as a young girl inspired Lewis Carroll to write Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Directed by Gavin Millar, it stars Coral Browne, Ian Holm and Jane Asher.
“Our screening offers a rare opportunity to see one of the most original British productions of the 1980s,” the Save the David Lean Campaign say in their latest newsletter. “It’s also fitting that we are screening it 150 years on from the summer’s day in 1862 when Lewis Carroll first told the Liddle family children about Alice.”
There will be a 1980s-themed support programme lasting about 25 minutes, featuring a short film The Yorkshire of the Brontë Sisters plus some advertisements and trailers.
Admission is free but donations to cover our expenses would be appreciated.
Shirley Community Centre is in Shrublands Avenue, Shirley, CR0 8JA. It’s very close to the Broom Road shops and The Goat pub, and the 194 and 198 buses stop nearby. Parking is available in the area. This venue has no stairs and is completely accessible to all.
