Education project’s legal challenge gets backing from Jasper

Lee Jasper: is backing a legal challenge to the funding cut at CSEP

If elected as MP, Lee Jasper has promised to provide support and advice for a legal challenge to Croydon Council’s recent decision to cut a £78,000 grant to the Croydon Supplementary Education Project.

Jasper, the black rights campaigner who is standing in the Croydon North by-election for the Respect party, says that he will back the Saturday and evening school that provides extra teaching for black children, but which had its future thrown into doubt by the Conservative-run council’s funding decision.

Some Conservative councillors justified the cut on the basis that underperforming white children were more deserving of council support.

At the council meeting to discuss the proposed cut, the mainly black audience in the public gallery was threatened with expulsion by the Mayor, who was unhappy with the black parents and children clapping and chanting.

“That decision can be challenged in law because of insufficient consideration of the equalities impacts when the decision was made,” Jasper told Inside Croydon.

“This is an area where I will be pleased to bring my expertise to help the school.”

Respect is holding a rally to launch its campaign in Croydon tonight.
