More than once, we have noted how the Scream Lounge is a true gem in Croydon, an established, commercial performance space for music and poetry that has operated since long before the riots with little help from outside bodies, but still providing locals with a bar and some unpretentious entertainment.
Its Acoustically Speaking session draws a regular and loyal audience. Fans have been missing Rosie and the Glass Balloon, with lead vocalist Roz Melrose having taken the autumn off in Mexico.
But Melrose was back last week for the final session of the year, billed as the “last act of 2012”, joined by her songwriter Chris Roe on guitar and Michael Wray on keyboards.
An addition by Roe to the group’s portfolio of quirky eccentric songs came with “Wavelength”, although this was at the expense of a performance of their fans’ favourite suburban kitsch rendition “Cath Kidston Ruined My Life”.
Their performance was book-ended by the mellifluous Steve Blue and up-and-coming star Kemi.

It’s a great place. I’ve spoken to people/musicians in the bar not from Croydon and I’ve been surprised when they say there’s nothing else like it in London. It was fortunate that the E Bar closed which allowed them to take on that facility and give us the great venue it is today.
