RUGBY ROUND-UP: Customers at Sainsbury’s, Purley Way, this weekend have the chance to take advantage of some extra special service when it comes to packing up the weekly shop.
Dozens of pupils from Wallington County Grammar School will be helping shoppers packing their bags, in the hope of donations towards their fund-raising for their rugby tour to Canada this summer.
Among the WCGS packing crew – which includes teenagers from Sutton, Croydon and across south London – will be at least three Surrey county players, Luke Adams, Kieron Clarke and Elliot Walters.
The packing service will be available from 10am until 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.
The tour will see the boys playing four fixtures against some of the best representative sides in British Columbia. David Johnson, the director of sport at the school, said, “To enable the tour to go ahead and be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the pupils, we are attempting to raise more than £8,000.”
That’s a lot of shipping bags to pack, though other fund-raisers are also planned, including a Race Night on Friday May 3, where you can try your luck and feel the thrill of horse racing from the comfort of WCGS hall. Tickets for the evening are £10 for adults and £8 for juniors, and include a fish and chip supper.
“Our final fundraising activity is a 10-mile walkathon around the Sutton area, where all the students and their parents will be collecting sponsorship for the event on June 30,” Johnson said. Michael Lynagh: inspired Warlingham player Rory Child to run the London Marathon
ANOTHER LOCAL rugby player, Warlingham’s Rory Child, is doing a spot of fund-raising on Sunday, running the London Marathon for the Stroke Association.
Child works as a producer for Sky Sports, and his marathon effort is in support of his colleague, Michael Lynagh, the former Australia captain, who suffered a stroke last year when aged 48.
“Michael is an inspiration to all of us at Sky and we want to support his chosen charity as much as possible – so we run on Sunday,” Child said.

Warlingham’s first XV’s season in London and South-East Division 2SE has petered out somewhat in recent weeks, and the final match last Saturday, at Charlton Park, reflected that with a 19-3 defeat.
Charlton Park now play Sutton and Epsom for a place in London 1 next season.
Probably of greater disappointment to the Hamsey Green club was the 33-7 defeat suffered by Warlingham’s 3rd XV in what was effectively an end-of-season title decider against Old Georgians in the Surrey Combination 1 reserve league. Old Georgians took the title by a single point.
Narrow margins also put an end to the hopes of success at Purley-John Fisher, too, in the final month of the season. Following the previous week’s two-point defeat at Old Mid-Whitgiftians that ended a 12-match unbeaten run, last Saturday PJF lost by a single point, 25-24, at home against London Exiles in London and South-East 3SW.
That saw PJF lose their unbeaten home record, and while they picked up two bonus points, it was not enough to make any ground on second-placed Weybridge Vandals for a promotion slot. PJF are at home at Parson’s Pightle against Sandown and Shanklin.
Despite Sandown’s lowly place in the division, this could prove a tough match for PJF: last week, the Isle of Wight side demolished the in-form Midwives 43-3.
