The community garden in Birdhurst Avenue, created by the local community in a residential street in South Croydon assisted with funding from the council, is seeking more cash. And you can help them get it with a simple online vote.
There is now a herb garden, two rockeries and a Japanese-style “river” garden in Birdhurst Avenue, all built, planted and cared for by the neighbours and now new friends. The gardens were officially opened in July.
Chris Gee, the group’s treasurer, said: “People have got involved in many ways and for that we are grateful. We want to make the park a place where everyone feels welcome as well as improving it by completing our second phase.”
The work is so well-regarded that the scheme has been shortlisted for funding – to be used towards a second phase of the garden – by the Skipton Building Society in its Grassroots Giving scheme.The money is granted dependent on the number of people who vote for a project.
With nearly 40 schemes shortlisted in London alone, competition for the cash is fierce, and the gardeners of Birdhurst Avenue are seeking the backing of Inside Croydon’s loyal reader.
