The Spread Eagle Theatre has a lot to live up to. After the touching pathos of Tea at Five and the visually stunning Dr Frankenstein’s Travelling Freakshow, Croydon’s newest little theatre is delivering up for its final production before Christmas what it is billing as a cross between Sex in the City and Bridget Jones.
Ginna Hoben’s one-woman play, The Twelve Dates of Christmas is about how much the holidays suck after your heart’s been crushed.
When Mary sees her fiancé kissing his co-worker on national TV at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, she duly dumps him and drops her engagement ring into a Salvation Army kettle. She then spends the next year being set up, strung up, and fed up as she navigates her life alone as a New York actor in her 30s.
The Old Stock Theatre Company’s most recent production in the town centre Fuller’s pub played to full houses for most of its short run, and Hoben’s acclaimed play being performed there next week is likely to be in high demand, so advance bookings are recommended.
Performances are from Tuesday November 26 to Friday November 29, at 7.30pm at the pub theatre on Katharine Street, Croydon, CR1 0NX.
