LILY “COOPER” RAE and ALEX “PUNK” CAMPBELL invite you to support a charity fund-raising event this Sunday
This Sunday, December 1, a very special Christmas roller derby event is taking place in a tucked-away sports centre in Carshalton – and all to raise funds for Croydon Nightwatch, a charitable cause which provides food and support for the homeless and vulnerable in the borough.
Croydon Roller Derby’s A-team, Riot Squad, has a practically untarnished winning streak this year. The tarnish arrived when a team came over from Toulouse and gave us a much-needed spanking – the irony is not lost on me.
Similarly, the newly formed B-team, Vice Squad, has enjoyed winning their first three bouts – triumphant baby steps for new skaters who six months ago could barely plough-stop.
So to celebrate a ruddy good year’s skating, Croydon Roller Derby is proud to present their final game of the year, Wreck The Halls – a Christmas-themed bout, which promises to give you more hard-hitting roller derby than ever before.
What should you expect? A three-bout festive knuckle-sandwich buffet which sees men and women putting the beat-down on each other, as well as a licensed bar (hooray!) and stalls heaving with roller derby merch and homemade Christmas goodies.
And, of course, should you be so inclined (and you really should), you can get to know the skaters, ask their advice and generally just schmooze the Croydon Roller Derby girls ahead of their fresh-meat intake in January 2014.
Roller derby is experiencing a boom in popularity in Britain and Croydon, ranked 33rd in Europe, is a fantastic league to get involved with.

The real focus of the event, though, is not the skating. It is the support of Croydon Nightwatch, Croydon’s primary charity protecting vulnerable and homeless people.
Nightwatch is staffed completely by volunteers, who meet each night, 365 days a year, in order to provide essentials like food, clothing and arrange shelter for Croydon’s homeless and vulnerable, as well as assisting those who find work, but are earning below the living wage.
Croydon Roller Derby is proud to assist Nightwatch this Christmas, preparing food, working in shelters and distributing blankets. We invite our fans to help out too, by bringing donations of winter clothing, sleeping bags and blankets, and leaving them at the Nightwatch stall at Wreck The Halls.
So, bring your friends and loved ones to an all-ages, all-thrills Roller Derby event, where nail-biting fun will be had and goodwill be done at the same time.
