The Norwood Society has announced the details of its series of summer walks over the coming weeks.
Some, such as the first, a tour of Anerley and Penge, are conducted as part of local festivals (in this case, the Crystal Palace Overground Festival). All have a Norwood Society local historian as a guide.
And all of them take in matters of local history and interest on a rich and varied range of subjects, from one of the long forgotten rivers of London to Sherlock Holmes’s connections with the area.
June 28: Anerley and Penge (Alun Thomas)
Start: 4.15pm Crystal Palace Station, Station Road, SE19 2AZ

July 26: Along Beulah Hill (Richard Lines)
Start: 2.30pm. front of All Saints Church, Beulah Hill (near Church Road),
SE19 2QQ. End: Crown Point.
Aug 16: Crown Point to West Norwood (Jill Dudman)
Start: 2.30pm. Tesco Express, 4 Crown Lane, SW16 3JG.
Aug 30: Weather forecasting, wine cellars, leach ponds, disabled soldiers, tea estates, extramarital relationships and Sherlock Holmes in Norwood (Stephen Oxford)
Start: 2pm, front of All Saints Church, Beulah Hill (near Church Road), SE19 2QQ
End: Junction of Grange Road & Whitehorse Lane,
Sep 27: Course of the River Effra (7 miles) (Alun Thomas)
Brisk Walk with history content.
Start: 10.30am Sainsbury, Westow Street, SE19 3RW
Lunch: Herne Hill, Picnic or Cafe/Pub
End: Oval Station approx 4pm.
