Megan Brown hopes everything goes like clockwork when she steps on stage for the Mitre Players’ new production next month.

Brown plays Constance, the titular character in The Clockmaker’s Daughter, which the amdram group will perform in the open-air Courtyard Theatre at Croydon High School in Old Farleigh Road, Selsdon, from July 13-15 at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee performance at 2.30pm on July 16.
It’s a chance for Croydon audiences to see the show before it travels to the prestigious Cornish clifftop theatre, the Minack, in August.
The Clockmaker’s Daughter is an original musical faerytale, by Michael Webborn and Daniel Finn. It had its professional premiere in London last year at the Landor Theatre, where it played to sell-out audiences and was nominated for 10 awards.
It goes like this… Every year in Spindlewood, the townsfolk gather at midnight on the last day of winter to turn the key in the statue that stands in the square. Behind the tradition is the story of a clockmaker hiding a secret and his mysterious new companion.
Naive and curious, Constance finds the clockmaker’s house stifling and wants to leave and experience life and love.
“It’s a magical story with a real family feel,” Brown said. “The music is lovely and people will go away singing bits of it.”
Brown is a teaching assistant and mum-of-two who lives in Caterham. She made her first appearance with the Mitre Players as a four-month-old baby. Since then, she has trodden the boards regularly for the Mitres, most recently as Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility last year.
She will be sharing the stage with her mother, Helen Harries-Rees, who plays her arch-enemy and bitter rival Ma Riley.
Brown’s real-life godfather Colin Warnock is the clockmaker and the cast of 30 also features Laura Brand, Peter Calver, David Morgan and Calum Roy.
Julia Ascott directs, with choreography by Helen Harman and the live band under the baton of West End MD Andy Rapps.
