Two “irreplaceable” sculptures designed as part of an art installation exhibit commemorating the centenary of the Battle of the Somme have been stolen from the Honeywood Museum in Carshalton.

The theft was reported by Sutton Council today, though they were unable to say when the sculptures – cast in lead, of bullets and bombs – were taken any more precisely than that they “were removed from under protective see-through plastic covers and stolen sometime between 16 and 20 July”.
The sculptures were part of an art installation entitled “Ballistic Baby, Dead Bells, Petards” in the museum’s Reflections on the Somme exhibition.
“I am dismayed given the context of the exhibition as a commemoration of the sacrifices made during the battle of the Somme that work could be stolen during the exhibition,”the sculptor, Rob Miller, said. “I expressly made these sculptures available on a not for a sale basis, as they form part of my archive of early works.
“Both works have never previously been exhibited and are irreplaceable, and I would appeal for their safe and undamaged return. I am also deeply grateful to Honeywood for their support and help during this time, and regret that I have had to remove the remaining works as a precaution.”
