The Conservation Volunteers have been busy clearing up a valuable green space in South Norwood
The Conservation Volunteers have been hard at work this week, clearing up Brickfields Meadow in South Norwood.
Brickfields Meadow is one of Croydon’s green oases. It is very popular with fishermen around the lake and young families using the playground.
Unfortunately the site has also been popular with fly-tippers and others leaving piles of rubbish.
The Conservation Volunteers have helped look after the site for a number of years and have teamed up with Croydon Council’s Don’t Mess With Croydon campaign to clear the rubbish. A dozen people turned out for the day and cleared a lorry-load of rubbish including old bikes, a washing machine, shopping trolleys and many bags of bottles, cans and wrappers.

One day’s clearing work by volunteers removed a lorry-load of fly-tipped rubbish
“We take our volunteers out every week to help look after the many beautiful sites we have in and around Croydon,” said Peter Underwood, the senior project officer with The Conservation Volunteers in Croydon.
“Councillor Hamida Ali asked us to come back to Brickfields Meadow this year and organise a clean-up day.
“It was good to see that there was less rubbish than in previous years and more local people helping to take care of the site.
“Everyone who took part was really pleased to see the positive impact we could have in just one day. ”
Tracey Bellamy, from Croydon Council, said, “We are keen to work with local people and support them to look after their streets and green spaces. If people want to get in touch or find out more details these can be found on Croydon Council’s website.”
TCV is still offering training for volunteer project leaders. For more information, click here.
