Anyone tired of being a wage slave, and who is thinking about being their own boss, has a couple of weeks in which to get themselves along to the Whitgift Centre for some free business advice.

The over-used pop-up hashtag has been deployed, largely because Croydon’s “pop-up business school” is utilising some space in the shopping centre (which the management there can’t rent out at the moment due to the long-term uncertainty over the redevelopment of the place).
It appears that our local council has put up some cash to pay for the scheme, which runs until Friday, October 21.
And what has anyone going along there got to lose, apart from their time spent attending the courses?
The free places are limited to the first 30 applicants – and these did not appear to have been allocated even by this afternoon (the pop-up school began its classes on Monday) – although the council claims that “more than 100 people have signed-up”. For anyone in work, finding the time to attend all 10 days of the course may be an issue.
The course includes:
• One-to-one help from a team of experts
• Tips on developing your own website for free
• Advice on marketing via social media
The council says, “The course is designed for those who have a business idea but no website, premises or start-up cash. The course runs from 10am to 4pm on weekdays.
“After the training ends, those who took part will then get the chance to operate their business rent-free from the old Shoe Couture shop unit near Starbucks in Whitgift Square,” the council’s press release adds, apparently oblivious to the possibility that not all the business propositions will be retail-based.

Anyone thinking about starting up their own business in Croydon, or anywhere else in this country for that matter in the present economic climate, must seek urgent medical advice immediately. The Titanic springs to mind.
What tops it all is that the Council will offer Rent Free premises to start it up. False economy from day one then. Typically, another publicity stunt from this out of touch abominable group of amateur politicians.
