The David Lean Cinema has won the “Local Culture” section in Croydon in the 2016 Time Out Love London awards.

The awards, in their third year, are determined by the general public who vote for their favourite restaurants, shops and, in this case, arthouse cinema. This year is the first when London’s weekly listings magazine has ventured out as far as Croydon.
The cinema’s campaign directors Adrian Winchester and Janet Smith attended Time Out’s award-winners event at the Bloomsbury Ballroom last night.
Winchester said: “We’re extremely grateful to our loyal supporters who considered us worthy of this prestigious award. It’s a great credit to all our volunteers who have made the David Lean a much-loved venue. We hope the resulting publicity will bring more patrons and help to keep the cinema open in future.”
The David Lean Cinema is an intimate, 68 seat venue within Croydon Clocktower, which from 1995 became associated with the best in British and world cinema. It closed in April 2011 as a result of Croydon council’s arts-related cuts.
But following a campaign which Inside Croydon helped to launch, since March 2014, with council cooperation, the Save the David Lean Cinema Campaign – which is now a Community Interest Company – has presented an expanding programme of films.
