Good people of Croydon, Old Palace Clog would like to invite you to try something new on Thursday evenings.
This is better than staying home to watch TV or going to the pub, although the latter is an option afterwards.
Old Palace Clog is a women’s North-west clog Morris dance side, formed in 1984-1985 and named jointly after the Archbishop’s Palace and the old Crystal Palace.
North-west clog dancing is from Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire, where it played an important role in the annual ceremony associated with the changing of the rush flooring in the churches. Dozens of dancers would follow the rush carts wearing wooden-soled clogs which were everyday wear in those days.
You can read more about this on the group’s website.
We practice on Thursday evenings at Stanley Halls, 12 South Norwood Hill, SE25 6AB.
We perform our dances around Croydon and elsewhere in London or further afield and frequently with other Morris sides.
We recently enjoyed fantastic weekends in Kent, at the Tower of London and at Swanage Folk Festival, as you can see from our photos.
The group is always looking for new members to join us. Musicians can be male or female.
“Please get it touch if you would like to give it a try. You will have a great evening. We are very nice, honestly,” says Myra Brooks from the group.
