Colleagues of Rajitha Kumar, who has worked at Croydon Law Centre in Davis House in the town centre for 12 years, received the Olaronke Flora Williams Memorial Award for Advancing Equalities on her behalf at the Law Centres Network national conference in Belfast.

“The impact of Rajitha’s work is shown in the way that she changes the lives of her extremely vulnerable clients,” said Les Allamby, the chief commissioner at the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, when making the presentation.

“Whether she is taking on someone who has been let down by four other solicitors, helping a victim of domestic violence or allowing an unaccompanied young person from Somalia thrive in college, Rajitha’s commitment to her clients is second to none.”

The Olaronke Flora Williams Memorial Award for Advancing Equalities acknowledges practical achievements of Law Centres lawyers in fighting discrimination or advancing equalities. It was awarded for the first time in 2016 in memory of Olaronke Flora Williams, LCN’s equality and diversity manager and a passionate fighter for social justice, who died earlier this year.

On receiving the inaugural award Kumar said, “I am truly humbled to have received this prestigious award. This recognition is such a great and unexpected honour to me and my colleagues at the Law Centre for the work we do to challenge discrimination and defend the rights and freedom of the most vulnerable members of the community.”
