South Norwood’s monthly book club meets next on April 6, when the book to be discussed is The Girls, the debut novel by American author Emma Cline.
The group meets on the first Thursday of each month at Yeha Noha, the cafe close to Norwood Junction Station.
After last week’s meeting, organiser Guy Clapperton said: “A fine discussion on The Painted Veil led to the conclusion that we all liked it but that it was ‘of its time’.
“A whole bunch of dislikeable but convincing characters, parallels with Jane Austen and a pretty self-centred person in the middle actually added up to an insightful read. It came to life in the middle section, although if we’re being generous the author’s description of Chinese children was ‘of its time’.
“Next month: The Girls, a bang up-to-date book published only last year. Hint: if you’re thinking of getting it from Amazon, unusually the hardback is cheaper than the Kindle edition.”
