History was made in the oldest international rugby fixture yesterday.

No, not the Calcutta Cup rugby match where England’s men enjoyed a record score over the Scots at Twickenham, but just up the road at The Stoop, where in the women’s international former Warlingham youth player Kay Wilson scored seven – yes, seven! –  tries in England’s 64-0 victory over Scotland.

It is the most number of tries scored by one player in a women’s international rugby match.

Wilson, 25, has amassed 41 caps since making her international debut in 2011, in a career which includes being in the side which won the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2014 and being a travelling reserve with the Great Britain 7s team which narrowly missed out on a medal at the Rio Olympic Games last year.

But she started in the sport playing mini-rugby at Hamsey Green. Without any women’s teams at Warlingham, Wilson moved on once mixed rugby was no longer possible, and had a couple of seasons at Richmond after finishing her university studies at Cardiff, and she’s recently returned to play for the south-west London club.

She’s made several return visits to her old club recently, where there is now a thriving and growing section for girls to play rugby through their teens.

After England’s 12-try performance yesterday, Simon Middleton, the England team’s head coach, said, “We’re thrilled with that performance, some of it was sublime at times. We really wanted to play with intensity and tempo today and we had a clear picture about what we wanted to do.”

Like England’s men, Wilson and England’s women’s team travel to Dublin next weekend for the Six Nations Championship decider against Ireland.
