Celebrations as cinema campaign marks third anniversary

The David Lean Cinema, in the Croydon Clocktower, will be putting out the bunting this week

The corks will be popping in the Clocktower next week, as the David Lean Cinema Campaign marks the third anniversary of the cinema reopening.

Patrons attending the screenings of Lion next Thursday will be invited to celebrate with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine.

Adrian Winchester, the campaign chairman, said, “It’s a particularly significant milestone, because it also marks the cinema having been open for longer than it was closed, following the cuts made by Croydon Council in April 2011.

“The closure was a long and painful period for our supporters, so there’s a sense that we can now move on and enjoy happier times. We hope the cinema has become an established and secure part of the Croydon arts scene.”

Although running the David Lean with very limited staffing and more than 60 volunteers is constantly challenging, the anniversary falls in a month of record sales. Nearly 1,500 tickets have been sold for March, 95 per cent of the number available.

It’s anticipated that ticket sales over the three years will reach 25,000 by the end of the month. With a reputation boosted by a Time Out “Love London” local culture award, Croydon’s independent community cinema represents a triumph over adversity.
