Bob Marley: an insight into his early life is coming to the Stanley’s Film Club
Esther Anderson, the former girlfriend of Bob Marley and the co-director of the documentary of the reggae musician’s early career, will be attending a screening of the film, The Making of A Legend at the Stanley Film Club next month.
The documentary was built around a set of tapes, recorded in Jamaica in the early 1970s, before Marley and the Wailers had made their international impact, offering an intriguing glimpse of the singer in his 20s. The tapes were lost for three decades, before being rediscovered earlier this century.
Anderson, a Jamaican actress, met Marley in 1972 at an Island Records party in New York. The Wailers had just released their first album Catch a Fire, and Anderson, who had lived in London, saw them as Jamaica’s answer to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. She offered to promote their music by making a film about them.
The film contains interesting claims about Anderson’s influence. It was she who encouraged Marley to write about segregation (“Get Up, Stand Up”) after they were put in a separate hotel from white record executives on tour; and she who persuaded the Wailers to wear dreadlocks to convey a Rastafarian image.
The Making of A Legend is being screened on October 25, part of another eclectic selection of films, which includes a Bring Along Baby daytime screening for parents of young children, and a Community Takeover film night, where the film – The Lunchbox – has been chosen by the Stanley’s Film Club’s punters.
