Civic ceremonies and choir to mark tram crash anniversary

Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of the Sandilands tram derailment, in which seven Croydon residents died.

Seven people died and many more suffered life-changing injuries at Sandilands

A civic ceremony to mark the anniversary will take place at Central Parade, New Addington, near the homes of many of those passengers who made that tragic journey last November.

Members of the public are invited by the council to join together at Market Square at 10.30am. The service will feature a choir of 60 children from Fairchildes Primary and Meridian High. An inscribed plinth has been installed at the square along with seating and planting to provide a permanent memorial to those who lost their lives.

The event will be attended by those directly affected by the derailment, as well as by representatives of all the agencies, charities and volunteers who helped in the aftermath.

It is expected the ceremony will last an hour and will conclude with the opportunity for tributes to be laid at the memorial site.

For those unable to attend New Addington, there will also be a minute’s silence observed at 11am at the flagpole outside the Town Hall in Katharine Street.

St Edward’s Church in New Addington will be open from 6am for quiet reflection, and a service will be presided over by the Bishop of Croydon at 5pm.
