Medal-winning performances from Youth Games squad

The under-11 girls’ team returned from the London cross-country championships with team medals

Croydon’s young athletes kicked off their 2018 London Youth Games campaign with a sixth place overall finish from 33 competing boroughs at the cross-country championships staged at Parliament Hill on Saturday.

Croydon’s 60-plus-strong squad brought home two team medals on the day.

The under-11 girls were spearheaded by the Croydon Harrier duo of Francesca Middleton in fifth and Amber Bloomfield two places behind. Islay Rose Pearson was 28th to complete the scoring trio. There were 136 finishers.

Harley Norman finished fourth in the near 200-strong field in the under-15 boys race. He was backed up by South London Harriers’ Rowan Fuss in seventh and club colleague Jack Burton 13th. The team scooped bronze in the team race.

Christopher Finch from Striders of Croydon impressed in the under-11 boys’ race finishing 11th out of 152 competitors. Not far behind were Joseph Mumford (28th) and Thomas Rhys Williams (33rd) to ensure the youngsters placed 5th.

One more top 10 finish in the team races came courtesy of the under-17 men. Croydon Harriers’ Robbie Tambling was 27th, just ahead of George Simpson (34th) and Jai Patel (45th).

Croydon’s other age group teams were led home by Sophie Lorke (20th, under-13 girls, 16th team), Conrad Norman (eighth, under-13 boys, 10th team), Amy Miller (11th, under-15 girls, 13th team) and Jessica Moore (35th, under-17 women, 16th team).
