Purley resident SANTHANA IBRAHIM, pictured left, is flying off to India next week to film a documentary about the life of a significant historic figure from Croydon, with much thanks to the readers of this website
I would like to say a big thank you to the readers of Inside Croydon.
I am making a film about the life of John Pennycuick, who was a student at the East India Company College in Addiscombe in 1857, and went on to become pioneering 19th century engineer who helped complete the Mullaiperiyar dam in India to divert the west-flowing Periyar River towards the east so it could irrigate the land.
His work continues to benefit millions of people living in the region and John Pennycuick is famous in India as a result.
I had been trying to track down his family to take part in the film, and following an excellent story on the Inside Croydon, John’s great niece and great grandson got in touch, as well as many other readers who offered to help with the family history research and film production.

I’m hoping to start filming at the dam and in the surrounding region in India on January 15 and will feature John’s family and people who I have met recently.
So thank you again to everyone who has helped to make this happen. I can’t wait to share the results with everyone.
