How Palace’s architects have drawn the future new stand at Selhurst Park

Modern sports stadiums are often known by the name of whichever amorphous corporate entity has bought up the naming rights to the venue, and Selhurst Park could be next.

Steve Parish, the co-chairman of Crystal Palace Football Club, is willing to trade in the club’s home ground name of the past century in a deal which would pay towards the building of the £100million stand.

In a report in last night’s Evening Standard, Parish said, “If it was the right number and something that helped us build it better or faster, then it is something we would look at it.

“Selhurst Park is a nice name… probably I would not personally mind as much because my goal is improving the club. My primary focus is to make the club better. But all of these things have to be weighed up. We are not going to give them up easily. I think people would understand if it is the right answer for the club and if it is a good association as well. That matters.”

One Parish comment seemed to suggest that the naming rights deal is necessary to provide the funding for the scheme, which would increase the ground capacity from 26,000 to 34,000.

“It might make the difference between doing it exactly how we want and making some compromises. It is not a decision that we would definitely do it. We would look at all options,” Parish told the paper.

Croydon council will consider the planning application on April 19.
