Inside Croydon loyal reader Tony Skrzypczyk will be able to lead his guided tours around Shirley Windmill through the rest of this summer proudly wearing a South Norwood Tourist Board T-shirt, as the winner of our latest competition.
Shirley Windmill: well worth a visit
There were no Panama pushovers in this World Cup of Croydon’s finest tourist attractions. In a fiercely fought competition, Skrzypczyk’s entry got the nod from our three judges – but only by the narrowest of margins.
We asked our readers to tell us, in fewer than 100 words: “what special sites in the borough of Croydon would our loyal reader like to see included in future tours to surprise and delight fellow residents and visitors from far and wide?”
Our illustrious panel of judges comprised Jane Nicholl, of the South Norwood Tourist Board, Ken Towl, our non-resident rambler, and iC Editor Steven Downes.
After due deliberations, from an over-flowing email inbox, they picked out Skrzypczyk’s Windmill tribute.
Our highly commended, though ultimately unlucky, runners-up were Dominic Wiley on Croydon Airport, and Emma Hope-Fitch’s amusing offering of a fly-tipped ersatz “beach” of builders’ sand dumped on Love Lane.
He won our competition and all he got was this T-shirt…
Among the other entries’ suggestions were No1 Croydon (the 50p bit building), Crystal Palace Park, Farthing Downs, Leon House and even Tony Newman’s office at the Town Hall, just to discover if anyone is there.
But the prize-winning entry, after a vote of our judges, was Skrzypczyk.
He wrote: “Shirley Windmill is one of only four remaining windmills in Greater London, and not a building you would expect to find in the middle of a 1990s housing development.
“It is a rare survivor of Croydon’s agricultural and industrial heritage dating from 1854. It is open seven days a year and by appointment for local schools, Scouting groups and heritage groups.”
