Croydon Voluntary Action is hosting a Communities Against Hate Crime event at Croydon Vision next Wednesday, March 13.
The free event starts at 4pm.
Sarah Burns, the CVA’s head of communities, will open the event and introduce a wide range of anti-hate crime speakers.
These include Anna Smith, on disability; Andrew Cleydert, on how women are affected; and New Addington Pathfinders and Safe Haven Youth on how this crime impacts youth.
Raindows Across Border will speak on LGBTQ and hate crime, and Charlie Henderson on the links between city centre regeneration and this offence.
Donna Murray Turner, the chair of Croydon Safer Neighbourhoods Board, will also provide feedback on Croydon’s first Hate Crime Awareness Week, which took place last October.
The meeting will also be attended by Michael Craven, from the all-party parliamentary group, Tell Mama, who work to stop Islamophobic hate crime; Croydon police chief inspector, Craig Knight and Gwanwyn Mason, programme manager for hate crime from the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime.
How the CVA is working with Victim Support to support community-led action against hate crime will be discussed, followed by short presentation on some of the partnership activity from the Communities Against Hate Crime project.
This will showcase how both voluntary sector organisations and grassroot community groups are working together to create a culture of resisting and overcoming hate in Croydon.
