Next Tuesday’s Croydon Photography Forum meeting features a talk by celebrated street photographer Dougie Wallace.
Wallace was the Street Series Winner in the inaugural Magnum Photography Awards in 2016 and was runner-up in the portraiture category of the 2015 Sony World Photography Prize.
Wallace’s appearance at the Croydon Photography Forum, organised by Lenses of Croydon, marks the fourth anniversary of the Forum’s launch. It was started in a bid to offer south London-based photographers a regular event on their doorstep that was of a similar quality to those held at the Print Space, Wex and in the many galleries and museums across London.

Organiser Lee Townsend said, “We’ve been privileged to have hosted a variety of photographers who have each shared the different journeys that shaped their arts practice. We have had everything from academics, wedding and commercial photographers, documentary to portrait photographers, landscape to street photographers and just about everything else in-between.”
Wallace is currently in the process working through the final edit of is upcoming book What Artists Do All Day.
It promises to be the latest in an internationally recognised series of long-term social documentary projects, which uses a distinct direct style of expressive street photography.
Wallace’s books Stags, Hens and Bunnies – A Blackpool Story (Dewi Lewis Media, 2014) and Shoreditch Wild Life (Hoxton Mini Press, 2014) both achieved critical acclaim.
Road Wallah, a unique insight into Mumbai’s cab drivers, will be exhibited at numerous photo festivals and galleries throughout this year. Road Wallah was short-listed for the 2015 European Book Publisher’s Award.
His most recent books Harrodsburg (Dewi Lewis, 2017) and Well Heeled (Dewi Lewis, 2017), have both proved popular among photobook collectors.
Living in Shoreditch has helped him to develop an eye for the hilarious, messy side of uninhibited human behaviour. At the same time, his Glasgow upbringing has shaped his style, which has been described as “visually exaggerated” and “hard-edged”.

His work has been featured in the Sunday Times Magazine, D Repubblica, Le Monde, New York Times, The Guardian, GQ, Dazed, Vice, Die Zeit, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, El País, and Der Spiegel, as well as a bookshop’s-worth of photography magazines.
Dougie Wallace will be talking at the Croydon Photography Forum next Tuesday, June 11, from 7pm at the CVA Resource Centre, 82 London Road, CR0 2TB.
