A colourful collection of more than 40 pieces of Clarice Cliff ceramics will be included Catherine Southon’s auction at Farleigh Golf Club in Selsdon on October 2.
The Clarice Cliff collection includes items from the well-known and highly collectable 1920s Bizarre and Fantasque ranges. Items include tableware from toast racks to tureens, and napkin rings to teapots, each item is hand-painted and generally in good condition.
“There are items for Clarice collectors and items for those who just want pieces of affordable Clarice Cliff,” according to television antiques expert Southon.
Prices range from £60 to £300.
It is all to be auctioned alongside a collection of pottery by another well known English ceramics designer of the 1920s and 1930s – Charlotte Rhead. The Art Deco Rhead pieces include highly decorative vases and tableware, and illustrate how Rhead mastered pâte-sur-pâte and tube-lined decoration.
The ceramics section of the auction will also include another private collection of more than 50 pieces of modern Moorcroft, with vases by female artists such as Sian Leeper, Emma Bossons, Anjie Davenport and Rachel Bishop.
“I am delighted to offer two large private collections of ceramics from celebrated female designers in our autumn auction,” Southon said.
“The first collection shows a diverse range of ceramics from two of Staffordshire’s most famous 20th-century designers – Clarice Cliff and Charlotte Rhead. The second collection is a real celebration of colour and is a stunning collection of limited edition modern Moorcroft from the 1990s and beyond. The pieces are designed by celebrated artists including Sian Leeper and Rachel Bishop, each piece has been bought from the collectors club and is in perfect condition.”
Also among the lots for auction at Farleigh next month will be an artists’ model of the sculpture of Sir Winston Churchill, part of the commission which produced the sculpture which now sits on Westerham Green, close to the wartime Prime Minister’s home at Chartwell.
