The first big volunteer clean-up of the year in Norbury Hall Park is this Saturday
The Friends of Norbury Hall Park are appealing for volunteers to join their clean-up this Saturday, February 29.
The “Squirrel Park” is very popular with its community, but with a reduced amount of maintenance, it has become tired, run-down and subject to increased littering.
The Friends are hoping volunteers will help kickstart the spring in the park by tidying-up the litter that has accumulated over winter. Even if people can only commit to as little as half an hour, all help is appreciated.
The Friends of Norbury Hall Park was established in 2017 by local park users who recognised its potential to benefit both the local community and increase biodiversity. They are now spearheading the challenge of restoring it for everyone to enjoy.
Natasha Ley, the Friends group secretary, said: “Norbury Hall Park is a special place with huge potential. We are calling on the local community to help us clear excess litter and get it looking summer-ready. All help is massively appreciated.”
Norbury Hall Park is a haven for people, and wildlife
Friends of Norbury Hall Park have been working closely with the council, which has recently resurfaced paths and installed new bins. The council is also currently refurbishing the old toilet block, so it can be used for special events.
Spanning eight acres, the park was originally the gardens of Norbury Hall, a Georgian mansion that is now a residential care home. As a result, it is less formal than a traditional urban park and instead features stretches of naturalistic wooded areas that are a haven for wildlife, particularly squirrels.
The meeting point for volunteers this Saturday is at the park gates at Craignish Avenue, SW16 from 11am.
