Ronnie Corbett has agreed to be the official starter at Mind in Croydon’s charity walk on Saturday May 25.

That doesn’t mean it is going to be a short walk, though.

Positive Steps will be staged in Lloyd Park and the event is hoped will raise thousands of pounds for the charity to mark Mental Health Awareness Week.

The walk begins at 10am, with participants encouraged to walk up to 15 kilometres – just short of 10 miles.

At average walking pace, the full distance should take a little less than two and a half hours, though the hills around the park may slow some who are less fit. Preparing for the walk in just about six weeks’ time ought to be an achievable fitness goal for most people.

“Please don’t let the 15km distance put you off,” the organisers say, “we are encouraging people to walk as far as they can manage. There will be markers along the way so people can set their own goals.”

Walkers are required to register in advance, with a fee of £10 for adults, £5 for children.

There are other activities on the day, including a football skills session run by Crystal Palace FC.
