Going for a song? Tory candidate’s Riesco connections

This is obviously just a coincidence.

Christie’s man: Robert Jenrick

It has emerged, more slowly than the other names reported by Inside Croydon this morning, that a 15th name on the long list for selection to become the Conservatives’ candidate in Croydon South at the next parliamentary election is Robert Jenrick.

Jenrick, apparently, “has a strong interest in heritage and conservation”, as befits someone who works as the international business director at West End auction house Christie’s.

Christie’s, of course, is the auction house chosen by Conservative-run Croydon Council to auction off 24 of the most valuable pieces of Ming China from the borough’s Riesco Collection.

That’s the same Riesco Collection over which our council, including senior Tory councillors Steve O’Connell, “Cuddly” Dudley Mead and Tim Pollard, is facing a Judicial Review for failing to follow its own policies over the decision to sell.

And Christie’s is looking to conduct the sale later this month in Hong Kong, presumably as a piece of international business.
