The Primary Sports Camp was staged this week, responding to demand for more sports competition following the 2012 London Paralympics
A sports team from St Giles School in South Croydon is celebrating after an action-packed day of inclusive sport opportunities at a Primary Sports Camp staged this week.
St Giles is a school for pupils, aged from four to 16, with physical disabilities and complex medical needs.
Activities at the Primary Sports Camp, led by top local coaches and volunteers, gave the disabled children the chance to try boccia, tennis, martial arts and sitting volleyball.
St Giles was among four schools from south London and the surrounding area to benefit from the event coming to the area.
After decades of successful disability sport events at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, national charity WheelPower chose Westcroft Leisure Centre in Carshalton to host the Primary Sports Camp.
Responding to the surge in demand by disabled people to play sport after the London 2012 Paralympics, WheelPower are providing up to 600 children sporting opportunities with support from Wembley National Stadium Trust.
WheelPower’s Sport Development Officer, Stewart Jeeves said: “Sport provides tremendous benefits at all levels and the Primary Sports Camp aims to introduce the children to the wide range of sporting opportunities and lead them to a healthy and active lifestyle.”
