Croydon Minster stages 150th anniversary great fire events

Discover the story of the devastating fire which destroyed almost all of what is now Croydon Minster in 1867 with a series of special 150th anniversary events staged over the first fortnight of the new year. fire-commemoration

Sat Jan 7, 11am: Concert – a specially commissioned work on the fire, written and performed by the Minster’s resident composer and Organist Emeritus Martin How (piano), with Tom Little (organ) and Paul Wilson (orator), plus a selection of additional songs. Venue: Croydon Minster.

Mon Jan 9 – Fri Jan 13: Commemoration Week – fire exhibition open for individuals and school parties; printed tour guides available. Venue: Croydon Minster – open 9.30am to 4pm each weekday except Thursdays.

Sat Jan 14, 3pm: Talk – by Brian Lancaster, local historian and author of the recent publication Consumed by Fire: the Destruction of Croydon Parish Church in 1867 and its Rebuild. Venue: Minster Church Hall (opposite House of Reeves).

Sun Jan 15, 10am: Commemoration Service – with the Rt Revd Jonathan Clark, Bishop of Croydon. Venue: Croydon Minster.
