Rosa May Billinghurst, the suffragette who attended rallies in her adapted handcycle

Croydon Bicycle Theatre Company is staging a special event on February 7 as part of the capital’s Women’s Suffrage Centenary celebrations.

They say, “We will be remembering Rosa May Billinghurst, an incredible suffragette who attended rallies in her adapted handcycle, only to have it turned over, robbed of valves and the tyres slashed by the police.

“Please join us from 6.30pm at the David Lean Cinema for a special private viewing of Croydon’s Women’s March banner, made as part of a Museum of Croydon project for the Women’s March on March 8. Our evening will begin with a private double-bill screening of BBC2’s suffragette-themed comedy Up the Women! and a new Anthony Lewis film on May Billinghurst’s life and legacy.

“After the interval we will be joined by Isabelle Clement, Director of Wheels for Wellbeing, an inclusive cycling charity running sessions out of Croydon Sports Arena. Isabelle will talk about her own experiences as a disabled cyclist before comedian and writer Rosie Jones treats us to a sneak preview of her new show, 15-Minute Rosie.

“We will finish by asking what battles are still left to fight as we are joined by Charlotte Dunckley, founder of Ash Magazine, author Miranda Roszkowski and the Suffragette City team.”
