Artist anger after town centre Stormzy mural is defaced

The Stormzy mural on Park Street. After just a fortnight, it is in need of repair

Street artist Alec Saunders expressed his anger over the weekend after his latest wall-side portrait, of Stormzy, was defaced.

Saunders had finished the large-scale painting of the Croydon grime musician on Park Street in the town centre earlier this month, but some time on Friday or Saturday the work was damaged with a sharp instrument, a “keying”, right across the face of the singer.

“Racist, right-wing fuckers defacing my @stomzyofficial piece, not even two weeks old,” Saunders posted to his Instagram account.

Saunders suggested that the culprit’s name was already known to the police.

Much of Saunders’ work has previously been displayed indoors, at galleries on the King’s Road, Chelsea, and in Spitalfields.
