Tram’s Elmers End branch on track with £3.3m from TfL

The Elmers End branch of the tram network is to be upgraded, including double tracking of the branch line and a second platform at the tram stop, as part of £24million-worth of transport infrastructure improvements around the capital announced this week by the Mayor of London.

The Elmers End branch line of the tram network is about to receive a £9m boost

In the announcement from City Hall, the Mayor’s office said that the “Elmers End tram station will provide additional facilities to enable service improvements and address reliability issues on the network.

“Once delivered, this would support growth in Croydon and Bromley and future growth along all parts of the tram network.”

The Elmers End project will cost an estimated £9million, with £3.3million coming from the Growth Fund.

As part of the investment from Transport for London’s Growth Fund, there will also be station improvements at Colindale, Walthamstow Central and Ilford to, according to the City Hall press office, “help to unlock new housing and jobs”.

TfL is now working with the local councils, property developers and stakeholders to finalise the funding packages for these four schemes, with a hope that work can begin on delivering them later this year. It is part of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy, which aims to create a greener, safer and more accessible city by encouraging greater use of public transport, walking and cycling and reducing reliance on car journeys.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is investing in public transport

The Mayor and TfL expanded the Growth Fund to £550million in December 2016 to allow more schemes to be brought forward. They believe that such schemes can “help leverage additional funding from developers and third parties to help unlock complex transport schemes and provide improved services at less well-connected sites that might otherwise not see investment”.

“I’m delighted to be announcing the next four schemes that will benefit from our Growth Fund – millions of pounds of investment that will directly improve people’s daily experience on our public transport network and unlock vital new housing and jobs,” Mayor Khan said.

“As London’s population grows, it is essential we continue to build world-class infrastructure like new Tube stations across the capital, but also target improvements in a way that can help deliver the new homes Londoners desperately need.”
