Locals get busy tidying up Norbury Hall Park this Saturday

The Friends of Norbury Hall Park are appealing for volunteers to help improve and clean-up the park this Saturday.

The park, known as the Squirrel Park due to its large population of friendly squirrels, is very popular with its local community. However, in recent years lack of investment and reduced maintenance has meant it has become tired, run-down and subject to increased littering.

This Saturday, June 30, the Friends are hoping volunteers will join in and help them clear excess litter, prune back overgrowing bushes and freshen up park structures with a lick of paint. No experience is needed and even if people can only commit to as little as half an hour, all help is appreciated.

The Friends of Norbury Hall Park was established in 2017 by park users who recognised its potential to benefit both the local community and increase biodiversity. They are now spearheading the challenge of restoring it for everyone to enjoy.

Ian Clarke, the chair of Friends of Norbury Hall Park, said: “Norbury Hall Park is special but with a bit of care and investment, it has the potential to be spectacular. This spruce-up event is the first step in reviving this much-loved park and all help will be gratefully received.”

Friends of Norbury Hall Park have been working closely with Croydon Council to improve the park. The council has committed to resurfacing paths and installing new bins in the park this year.

Spanning eight acres, the park was originally the gardens of Norbury Hall, a Georgian mansion that is now a residential care home. As a result, it is less formal than a traditional urban park and instead features stretches of naturalistic wooded areas that are a haven for wildlife, particularly squirrels.
