Old Coulsdon turns out for Grange Park’s commemoration walk

More than 100 residents took part in  last weekend’s commemoration walk in Grange Park, Old Coulsdon, as we enter the final 100 days until the centenary of the Armistice at the end of World War I in 1918.

Chris Wright, the chairman of the Friends of Grange Park and the Old Coulsdon World War I commemoration group, said, “The Friends of Grange Park, helped by the Old Coulsdon World War I Group, took up the challenge from Fields In Trust to organise an event to commemorate the ‘Allies One Hundred Days Offensive in 1918’ at very short notice.

“Full credit to these two local groups as over a hundred local residents completed the walk around Grange Park, scattering poppies, showing the great local community spirit in Old Coulsdon and marking the event by saying ‘thank you’ to the generation of local young men gave their lives in this campaign and helped change our world for the better.”

From Coulsdon alone, 16 men died during the war between 1914 and 1918.

Coulsdon is one part of the borough where large poppies have been fixed around the town centre as part of the commemoration activities leading up to the centenary of the end of the war that was supposed to end all wars.

There may be further commemoration walks near you in the weeks between now and November 11 – Remembrance Sunday – as Fields In Trust in cooperation with the Royal British Legion are asking parks around the country to take part.
