Mayor of London wants to give you two trees to plant

The Mayor of London wants to give you a tree, or two…

Working together with the Woodland Trust, The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy and Sainsbury’s, City Hall is giving away 24,000 trees to Londoners.

The recipients are to be chosen by ballot. Applications need to be received by November 5. The winning entries will be selected at random from all Londoners that apply.

The City Hall organisers say, “All of our trees are field maple or birch – beautiful garden species that are great for wildlife and easy to plant. The saplings will be between 10 and 18in tall and the trees can be kept fairly small. Their spectacular autumn colours will look great in your garden.”

The trees come in packs of two.

“If your name is drawn in the ballot, your pack of two saplings will be sent to you by the end of November. When they arrive, it will be right in the middle of planting season – and you’ll be able to join thousands of Londoners planting trees during our city-wide planting weekend on December 1 and 2. All you’ll need is a spade!”

The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy project was launched in 2015 when an appeal was made to all 53 Commonwealth nations to contribute areas of indigenous forest to be preserved in perpetuity.

The Woodland Trust is the largest woodland conservation charity in the United Kingdom concerned with the creation, protection, and restoration of native woodland heritage.
