Halfords gears up to take on rival business’s redundant staff

Halfords has extended an offer of job interviews to all members of staff affected by the closure of the ATS Euromaster branches in Croydon, Beckenham, Morden and Sydenham.

Business opportunity: Halfords is looking to interview ATS staff and win over their customers

This follows ATS Euromaster’s announcement last month that 86 of its service centres, selling tyres, brakes and offering MOTs, are to close.

The Michelin-owned company is closing more than one-third of its network, blaming overcapacity, increasing costs and sluggish growth. It is reckoned 400 employees are affected by the closures, including in four south London centres.

Halfords, with 639 garages nationwide, is one of the country’s largest employers of automotive technicians. The company services, maintains and repairs vehicles for 1,400,000 customers annually.

Halfords says that there is a shortage of qualified automotive technicians, with as many as 20,000 vacancies in the sector.

To assist customers whose bookings are impacted by ATS branch closures, Halfords say that their garages will prioritise MOT and other service bookings originally made with ATS, helping customers avoid delays and ensuring their vehicles remain roadworthy.

“We are pleased to be working in partnership with ATS to explore employment opportunities for affected colleagues, while also ensuring that motorists in these parts of London continue to have access to competitive, convenient, and trusted automotive services,” said Halford’s Leon Deehy.
