Gas infrastructure firm SGN is to begin works to replace piping in and around Marlpit Lane, Coulsdon, from Monday, May 26. The works are expected to last through to the end of August.
It’s a gas: SGN say that their works along Marlpit Lane will last through the summer
The works will see two-way and some three-way temporary traffic lights installed on Marlpit Lane, as well as Marlpit Avenue, Hillside Road, Stoneyfield Road and Bradmore Way, with some traffic delays and congestion expected.
On the SGN website they say: “We’re preparing to carry out essential network upgrades along Marlpit Lane to ensure nearby homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.
“Our engineers will be replacing our old metal mains with new plastic pipe from Monday May 26. This work is expected to last approximately 11 weeks.
“To ensure everyone’s safety, we need to install temporary traffic lights along Marlpit Lane around our work area. These lights will ensure traffic flow can be maintained safely past our site and excavations in the carriageway.
“They will be in operation for the duration of our work.”
SGN ask residents and visitors to the area to:
- Advise visitors and delivery drivers of the temporary lights
- Allow additional times for your journeys
- Check for updates to bus services, schedules or stops
“We understand roadworks can be frustrating for road users, residents and businesses,” SGN say.

“However, the new plastic pipe has a lifespan of 80 years. This means that once the work is complete, the Coulsdon community will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.”
The works will begin outside Poppy Café and move towards the rear of Coulsdon CofE Primary School.
“Two-way temporary traffic lights will be in operation in Marlpit Lane during our work to ensure everyone’s safety and manage traffic flow.”
And when the works reaches the junctions of Marlpit Avenue, Hillside Road, Stoneyfield Road and Bradmore Way, “our two-way lights will be replaced with three-way lights”, they say.
