The Croydon artist who produced the Elianne Andam memorial mural has had his work recognised by a prestigious annual art competition.
Memorial mural: artist Alec Saunders and his Elianne Andam work
Alec Saunders has been named among the winners of the 2025 Blunden Prize, which is organised in association with the world-famous Henry Moore Foundation.
It is well-deserved recognition for Saunders, who is best known for his street art.
He created the memorial mural for Elianne Andam that stands near the spot on Wellesley Road where the Croydon teenager was murdered in 2023.
The art competition offered a £20,000 first prize and artwork commissions from organisers Stonewater, providers of affordable housing.
Judges considered around 50 submissions from artists of all disciplines, who sought to design a new installation for one of Stonewater’s housing developments, Station Island in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.
Prize guy: Saunders’ Blunden Prize trophy
“Stonewater installs public art on all its developments to create a distinctive sense of place and build strong communities,” the organisers said.
Another London artist, Amy Jackson, was named as the Bluden Prize 2025 winner, with Saunders and Rekha Barry-Houston as runners-up also winning commissions with significant budgets.
Saunders said he was “delighted” to have his work recognised in this manner.
“As runner-up, I’ve been awarded a major commission which will be created entirely from sustainable materials, affirming my ongoing exploration of environmental responsibility.
“I’m truly grateful for this honour and excited to bring the project to life.”
