Cartyr follows in Farah’s footsteps across Parliament Hill Fields

And they’re off: competitors in one of the London Youth Games races on Saturday set off up Parliament Hill Fields

Cartyr Jenkin won the boys’ under-11s gold medal running for Croydon at the London Youth Games staged at Parliament Hill Fields on Saturday.

Jenkin covered the hilly 1.4-kilometre course in 5min 27sec, to follow in the spiked running shoe footsteps of previous London Youth Games cross-country champions on the same course, such as Mo Farah and Alex Yee, who both went on to win Olympic golds.

Jenkin is a member of Coulsdon-based South London Harriers and an enthusiastic parkrunner. His gold medal-winning performance adds to his win in the Surrey Schools’ Championships in January this year.

It is the second year in succession that a Croydon runner, and member of South London Harriers, has won the boys’ under-11s title at the London Youth Games: Yannick Brown took the title in 2024.

On Saturday, more than 1,500 young runners aged from 10 to 17 from London’s 32 boroughs took part on one of the world’s most famous, and famously demanding, cross-country courses across Hampstead Heath.

Other leading performances by runners representing Croydon on Saturday included Isabelle Crotty (14th, girls’ under-17s), Zoe Davis (10th, girls’ U15s), Rosa Bryars (20th, girls’ U11s), Logan Hatchwell-Wray (7th, boys’ U15s), and Ewan Sone (7th, boys’ U17s).
