Carshalton cadet Katie wins the approval of the First Sea Lord

In tune: Mitcham-based Sea Cadet Katie Rolfe is passing on her expertise

A Carshalton teenager is representing the Sea Cadets on the national stage while helping train the next generation.

Katie Rolfe, who enrolled at Merton Sea Cadets in 2018, has risen through the ranks, gaining a string of qualifications in drill, seamanship, music and leadership along the way.

Her achievements have been recognised at the highest level, with her selection as one of the First Sea Lord’s Cadets for 2025, a prestigious national role that brings her into contact with senior Royal Navy figures and key ceremonial events.

Rolfe has also been central to the revival of the London Area Band, performing as a bell lyrist. In 2024, she helped secure first place at the Lord Mayor’s band competition, as well as supporting the band’s return to the Sea Cadets’ National Band Competition after decades away.

She qualified as a Cadet Drill Instructor at the Portsmouth shore establishment, HMS Excellent, in 2023, underlining her discipline and leadership, and has since taken on a mentoring role within the Mitcham unit.

Training to succeed: Mitcham Sea Cadets are seeking volunteers to help with training across a range of activities

Rolfe’s ability has also been recognised locally. She was selected as Deputy Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet for Merton, representing the borough at civic events and official engagements.

Alongside this, she has gained Royal Yachting Association Powerboat Level 2 and Sea Cadet Corps coxswain qualifications, giving her the skills to take charge on the water, as well as completing a BTEC Level 1 in Teamwork and Personal Skills. She completed her first Marine Engineering course when aged just 13, an experience that has helped shape her ambition to pursue a future as an engineer.

Rather than stepping away, Rolfe has stayed on at the Commonside West unit as an adult volunteer, helping younger cadets.

“I joined the unit and it’s completely shaped who I am,” Rolfe said.

“I’ve grown in confidence and had experiences I never imagined. It can be challenging at times, but that’s what helps you grow.

“The best part now is helping younger cadets do the same and seeing them come out of their shell.”

Merton Sea Cadets draws young people from across Croydon, Carshalton and nearby boroughs. The unit runs weekly sessions alongside weekend and on-the-water activities, offering structured opportunities for young people at a time when youth services have become increasingly limited.

The group was most recently out in force at Mitcham Carnival, taking part in the parade and performing in front of local residents.

As with many youth organisations in south London, the unit relies on volunteers while providing structured opportunities for young people aged 10 to 18.

The unit is currently open to new cadets and volunteers, offering opportunities for young people and adults to get involved in everything from water-based training to community events.

“Stepping outside your comfort zone can open doors,” said Katie Rolfe. “Sometimes those opportunities are closer to home than you think.”
