Croydon will pay solemn homage to those that died in two world wars and subsequent conflicts on Remembrance Sunday, which this year is on November 8.
All are invited to attend.
The wreath-laying will take place at Croydon’s war memorial on Katharine Street, beginning at 10.30am.
There will be a two-minute silence, followed by a short service of remembrance. The Worshipful Civic Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Mohammed Islam, and the Deputy Lieutenant of Croydon, Colonel Ray Wilkinson, will lead the wreath-laying ceremony. They will be followed by the Royal British Legion, civic and faith representatives, members of the military and the public.
“Anyone who wishes to lay a wreath may do so,” the council says. “Wreath-layers should meet outside the Spread Eagle pub on Katharine Street at 10.20am and will be called forward at the appropriate time to lay their wreath.”
Croydon Minster will hold its Remembrance Service at 5.30pm on November 8. Again, the public are invited to attend.
Other wreath-laying ceremonies will take place around the borough, including at the RAF Memorial next to the site of the former RAF Croydon by the Purley Way, at Kenley airfield (former RAF Kenley) and at Marlpit Lane in Coulsdon.
Councillor Mohammed Islam, Croydon’s ceremonial mayor, said: “Remembrance provides an important opportunity for our community to come together and honour those who served with courage and dedication.
“As we reflect on the sacrifices made in the past, we also remember all those whose lives continue to be affected by conflict and reaffirm our shared aspiration for peace.”
