“It’s always our aim to honour the David Lean’s dedication to intelligent and entertaining cinema, and we’re delighted that our March programme includes four very different films featuring a range of fascinating characters,” said Philip Howard, the StDLC’s programmer.
The screenings – at 2.30pm and 8pm – are free to attend, though the organisers do ask that those attending patronise the pub’s bar. Seats are first-come, first-served. With growing popularity, some afternoon screenings have been a “full house”, so it is suggested that you arrive at least 10 minutes before the film starts.
The other films in the March programme are:
March 11: Ruby Sparks (15) 2012 USA 104min
Directors: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris
Stars: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan
Short of inspiration, a young author (Dano) finds that he can create his perfect woman (Kazan) by writing about her. A wildly original romance from the directors of ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, with a superb cast including Annette Bening, Elliot Gould and Steve Coogan.
March 18: Les Adoptes (15) 2011 France 100min
Director: Melanie Laurent
Stars: Marie Denarnaud, Denis Menochet, Clementine Celarie
Marine (Denarnaud) has been inseparable from her adoptive family since childhood, but everything changes when she meets Alex (Menochet) and tragedy strikes. After a very limited release, it’s possible that we may be only the second UK venue to show this directorial debut from Laurent, previously known as the star of a very different film, Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. English subtitles.
March 25: The Sapphires (PG) 2012 Australia 103min
Director: Wayne Blair
Stars: Chris O’Dowd, Deborah Mailman
Set amid the social change of 1968 and based on a true story, this uplifting drama tells how a quartet of Australian Aboriginal girls became an international soul-singing sensation under the guidance of an eccentric manager (O’Dowd).
